Newbie VPN question

Thanks to all in advance. I am a business owner with a decent knowledge of
IT so hopefully I only need some nudging.

I set up a VPN as specified here:

http://www.windowsdevcenter.com/pub/...onnection.html
The only difference is I set it to log onto my domain.

I can successfully connect to the VPN from my home. I guess I was expecting
to be able to browse my remote office network. Instead, after connecting
successfully to the VPN, I can only browse my local (my home wireless)
network computers, and I cannot browse the Internet at all.

I think my problem is mostly conceptual. Any advice is appreciated.

BD

In your VPN connectoid of your VPN client computer open properties and go to
networking/tcpip/propeties/advanced and uncheck use default gateway on
remote network. This will enable "split tunneling" which can be a security
risk if you are not using a firewall and antivirus protection on your VPN
client. --- Steve

So far, so good. Now I am connected to the VPN and can surf at the
same time. So now, how do I go about browing my remote network?

Again, thanks in advance.

Browsing usually fails on a VPN connection. Browsing depends on LAN
broadcasts, and these are not carried by RAS/VPN connections. But you should
be able to see shares using "net view" and access the shares using "net use"
commands.

Bill gave good advice [as per usual]. VPN "browsing" can be problematic. To
make it work optimally you really need to enable wins on a server on the
main network other than the RRAS server, make sure that the VPN server and
domain controller [if any] are also a wins clients, and that the workgroup
name on your VPN client is the same as the domain/workgroup at the main site
where the VPN server is located. If that is not possible you may find it
easiest to map to the IP address of the remote computer. Say you have a
server/computer that you want to access and it has a static IP address of
192.168.1.55. To connect to it from the VPN client you can map a drive or
use \\192.168.1.55\sharename in the run box. You can also configure the
lmhosts on your VPN client with IP to computer name mapping to make
accessing shares easier but that would work best if the computers had static
IP addresses. Lmhosts file can also be used if wins is not an option as
shown in the link below. --- Steve

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;150800 --- note
that lmhosts file syntax is case sensitive and the filename must NOT be
saved with an extension.
