1. The remote computer doesn't need to join the domain.
2. Which IP the remote will be assigned, it depends on how you setup RRAS. 3. You may want to CMAK and create a batch file to establish the VPN first and map the shared drives. This How to may help, How to vpn automaticallyAdd pre-setup VPN auto-connection by CMAK to the Startup. 2. Create a logon batch with rasdail command to start the VPN connection. ... http://www.howtonetworking.com/VPN/autorasdial1.htm Bob Lin, MS-MVP, MCSE & CNE Networking, Internet, Routing, VPN Troubleshooting on http://www.ChicagoTech.net How to Setup Windows, Network, VPN & Remote Access on http://www.HowToNetworking.com <(E-Mail Removed)> wrote in message news:(E-Mail Removed) ups.com... My experience has been setting up VPNs for the purpose of using a Remote Desktop Connection (RDC). Now I do not want to use RDC to access another computer. What I have and what I need to do are the following: I have a Windows 2003 Server that has a shared drive which holds a database file (used with a client/server application) that I need to access remotely using XP Pro. Currently, the remote user connects to the VPN, launches RDC to the Server's desktop (ugh!!), and runs the application from there. Currently the remote worker's system is not part of the domain. This was an emergency setup and I know it has many faults. What I want to be able to do is to treat this remote user as if they were connected to the local domain like all other users. This would mean installing the client software on the remote user's system, then launch the VPN, map a drive to the shared database file, & setup the client software to use this mapped/database location. The remote user need to print to their local printer from this application. What steps, at the Server & remote client, do I need t take in order to accomplish this? What would be ideal is if the remote worker's PC automatically connected to the VPN on login. A few questions: 1. Does the remote worker's PC and user have to be added to the Server's Domain? 2. Does the remote worker's PC's IP address have to be in the same scope as those on the local network? |

Thanks for replying..
Concerning question#1 below: If the computer for the remote user does not have to be added to the domain, does the remote user have to be added to the Active Directory of the domain? The remote user works at a branch office and has never been a part of the main site's domain. Robert L [MVP - Networking] wrote: > 1. The remote computer doesn't need to join the domain. > 2. I am not sure that what you are trying to do is a good idea. Running a
database access program over a VPN connection can be frustrating. A VPN connection is slow and it also has latency problems. You may find that database requests time out because of this. If you are using remote desktop or ternimal services this is not a problem. The application is running on the LAN with the database server. Only the KVM data is crossing the VPN. If you move the client software to the remote client, the database requests are using the VPN link, which may well be too slow for the purpose. <(E-Mail Removed)> wrote in message news:(E-Mail Removed) ps.com... > Thanks for replying.. > > Concerning question#1 below: If the computer for the remote user does > not have to be added to the domain, does the remote user have to be > added to the Active Directory of the domain? Using the RDC method does not enable us to print from the application
to a local printer (a printer where the remote user is located). Furthermore, we do not have a spare PC on the LAN for this remote user to RDC to --they are currently RDC to the Server's desktop to run the application. So how to branch office share client/server applications with a main branch?? Bill Grant wrote: > I am not sure that what you are trying to do is a good idea. I agree with Bill. The better solution should be TS/RDC over VPN. The remote computer should be able to re-map the local printer if you have correct configuration.
