I have been trying to get two computers to 'see' each other on a
Belkin network. I use windows xp pro on both computers.

Both get to the internet.

I can ping both addresses.
When I ping the names, I can ping the same computer name ok.
Pinging the other computer name fails on both computers.

My physical setup is

A Wireless antenna connected to a Belkin wireless router.
The first computer is hardwred to the router by the ethernet
connection.
The second computer is connected by a USB Belkin adapter.

When I do : START RUN //up I see the same computer.
When I do : START RUN //down I don't see any thing.
up and down are the computer names I assigned.
They are both on the same workgroup.
No Domain is assigned.

I want to be able to use the Belkin routers as both internet and
network connections. I don't want to run extra wires if I can help it.

I have tried the MS build your own network 20 or more times, often it
attempts to assign my firewire connector to the network.

Thanks for you help in the past, thanks for you help.

1) Make sure you have 'Client for Microsoft Networks' bound to the
connection. Right click the connection and choose Properties. If 'Client
for Microsoft Networks' is not checked, check it.
2) Make sure you have NetBIOS over TCP/IP. Right click on the
connection, choose Properties, select the TCP/IP protocol, click the
Properties button, click the Advanced button, select the WINS tab.
Select either the default radio button or the 'Enable NetBIOS over
TCP/IP' radio button.

That may be sufficient to establish the Network Neighborhood. If either
computer still cannot see the other by name, you may have the node type
set improperly:

There are four node types:
1) broadcast only
2) WINS only
4) broadcast then WINS
8) WINS then broadcast

If the node type is 2 (or if there is no node type set but the
DHCPNodeType is 2), and if there is no WINS server on your network, then
ther is no way for the system to find other computers by name.

To check/change the NodeType, run regedit (Start|run|regedit)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE|SYSTEM|CurrentControlSet|Servic es|NetBT|Parameters
If there is a NodeType and it is 2, set it to 4 or 8.
If there is no NodeType, create one and set to 4 or 8.

BTW, to connect to computer named 'up' from Windows Explorer, the syntax
is \\up not //up .
