Newbie router / modem question

Just looked at the spec of the Solwise SAR130 which
Plusnet ( and Solwise cheaper !) supply but cannot
find anything on variable sharing of the download speed
between 2 computers.
Is it possible, for example, to have 1 computer on 64 kbps
and the other on around 400 kbps.
If not, any other routers have this facility ?

ta, Chris

It won't work. The local ADSL router can only affect
traffic going out. To run some form of traffic queuing
you would need to do it at the next upstream hop and
there is no way BT are going to do that.

Thanks,

The only solution I could find was software
http://bandwidthcontroller.com/index.html
although Solwise techs said something about a
new model SAR504 coming out in Feb. with
an Argon 3 chipset which will support throttling.

It's nicest to do that way.
Acceptible results can often be got by dropping
some outbound packets for the computer that's using too
much bandwidth.

Delaying packets (outbound and inbound) can also help too,
if the other machine is active.

No, it just won't work. You may end up with a downstream
link which is not fully used. Dropping packets can also
cause the remote system to resend packets for which no
ACKs have been received. Remember that the system has no
idea of the type or size of traffic coming down.

I have done this, and it works somewhat.
It's not perfect.
Packet loss is interpreted as congestion by the TCP/IP protocol,
and you get exponential backoff kicking in, and slowing the
data rate.
It's in the nature of TCP/IP that if you take a 512K link, and open
up two connections to fast machines, one with a 100ms delay, one
with a 500ms, then the 100ms delay one will hog the line.
Doing it at the far end of the link is the right way, but not often
possible for ADSL.

B&Q are having a clearance sale of power tools at the moment - advert
in todays paper. There is a _Performance Power 1250 _??? router
complete with a kit of attachments in a case for 59.58GBP.
