I currently have a desktop PC with a NIC which is connected to my cable
set-top box. I also have another NIC in my PC through which I connect a
laptop computer. I've configured Windows 2000 Internet sharing on this 2nd
NIC and it works a treat.
But I'd like to connect the laptop via wireless networking...
I was first of all thinking along the lines of a wireless access point such
as the Adaptec device plugged into the 2nd NIC in the main PC (via a
crossover cable) and a wireless PC card in the laptop and continue to use
Internet sharing via the PC. Another alternative was a Wireless cable
router.
But then I came across the idea of "ad-hoc" or "peer-to-peer" wireless
whereby all that's needed is a wireless PCI card in the PC and a wireless PC
card in the laptop. These two wireless devices then talk directly to each
other without the need for a wireless access point. Ideal in my set-up where
all I need is to connect two devices.
Few questions though:
1. Does the set-up work with Windows 2000 Internet sharing? I'm guessing it
does as the wireless PCI card in the PC appears as a "normal" Windows 2000
NIC
2. Are there any range limits due to this set-up compared to a wireless
access point?
3. Can all compliant wireless PCI/PC cards work in peer-to-peer mode?
Thanks, Rob.
