Here goes...

Got a NTL cable modem attached to pc by usb cable. (There is an ethernet
socket on the modem, but I have no ethernet card in the pc).

Wanted to set up wireless network so this pc (Win98SE) can share files &
internet with 2 wireless-enabled laptops (running WinXP).

Bought Aldi's Medion MD40900 WLAN router as it seemed a good offer - has 4
ethernet ports (RJ45), 1 DSL modem port (RJ11), 1 analogue modem port
(telephone plug), & a power-in socket. (apparently the built-in modem
facility [adsl/dialup] is meant as a 'back-up'). Figured the router should
go between the existing cable modem and the pc, but there's no usb socket on
the router so it seems there's no way to connect the two?

Can I simply disconnect the usb lead that links the pc & the cable modem,
use an ethernet cable to connect the ethernet socket on the cable modem to
an ethernet socket on the router (or is that only for 'outgoing'
to-the-network data?), & rely on attaching a usb wireless dongle to the pc
to receive the internet?

Sorry thisis long, or idiotic, but I'm struggling a bit. Thought it would be
easy, of course

Thanks for any help......

You have bought the wrong kind of router. That one is designed for ADSL, not
cable.

You need a wireless cable router with an RJ45 "WAN" port, and your modem will
plug into that.

I'd recommend this:
