Hi All,
I wish to connect two pcs, both running xp pro, and both have a 56k
modem. I do not want to share an internet connection, but the xp network
wizard seems to want to do this.
Reasons being, I do not want to have to leave the host pc(which has light
usage) "always on" when my son needs to dial-up.
any advice greatly appreciated. paul.

All you need do is disable Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
Choose Network Connections form Control Panel and select the
connection you have created. Then on the Advanced Tab, un-tick the ICS
box.
You will then have to access the internet via the modem on each
machine.

Two options:
1) Buy a "network modem" or router with dial-up facility and at least
2 hub/switch ports for straight-through cables.
2) Connect the PCs with a crossover cable and enable "modem sharing"
on both of them so that it is used only when either finds the other
already has the phone-line.

Need more detail? - ask
