Newbie networking desktop and laptop

I have a desktop and laptop, both with Windows-98SE (up to
date with patches). I would like to network the two using
the wireless Netgear router and laptop card (802.11b).

I posted a message several week ago and the responses
indicated to set the desktop's master browser to
enabled and the laptop to auto. This has gotten me a step
closer but I still can't get to the other system from
either system. In network neighborhood the laptop show
itself (mylaptop) but not the desktop (mydesktop). The
desktop however show both system but if you click on
mylaptop (after a minute or so) the error message
"The computer or sharename could not be found. Make sure
you have typed it correctly and try again".
"\\mylaptop is not accessable".

I noticed while the desktop was trying to locate the
laptop the router did not appear to show any activity by
on the front indicator lights.

I don't understand if the desktop sees the laptop why it
believes the name is incorrect.

Any help would be appreciated...
