Hi, Just built another system and I'm using my old box for backing up.

No problem connecting them over a LAN connection! My problem is that I am
using Win98SE OS for the backup.

Is there a way of using the box without a monitor or KB? I hope you
understand! When it boot it asks for a network neighbourhood password!

At the moment I'm booting blind and using a KB and hopefully when needed I'm
pressing the enter key "Seems to work" BUT.

Any help, much appreciated. If you get my drift:-0

Use one of the VNC variants for remote control - I like TightVNC but
others are probably just as good. Or if you just want it to sit there
and serve files there's an automatic login option in TweakUI (probably
still available for download from Microsoft somewhere).

Yes! OK thanks, never thought of that :-( Next problem! When I just switch
off the backup;-) A lot of people think it's dangerous to the comp, can't
see why?

Next step is to disable scandisk I assume?

TIA

I thought you wanted the machine to save your files, not mangle them :-)
Just switching the machine off will leave the file system in an
inconsistent state. If you're not going down the VNC route there are
apps that will remotely shut down the machine. Here's one

I don't! But I just thought if I cold boot down scandisk would auto run?

I think the point has been missed here. I take it you don't want this
machine to ask for a password.

1. In the Windows folder delete the file default.pwl (if it exists)

2. Right click network neighbourhood. Set the "logon" to "windows logon"
click OK

3. Machine will reboot, when it asks for a password. Type default as the
user name and leave the password field blank click OK.

4. Do a test reboot to see if it works.

The BIOS may allow the machine to boot without the keyboard. The setting
is usually on the "basic" page set it to "halt on no errors"

Hope this helps, graham

Yes, figured it out eventually :-) That's precisely what I did. Thanks.

I have a similar problem - am using Win XP, my desktop PC sees and talks to
my laptop, but when I try to see the desktop Pc from the laptop it ask for a
password.

There are no logon passwords set on the machine, but even leaving the field
blank does not work, it has me stumped.

Can anybody help? Thanks

Windows XP likes to use passwords, it's usually best to set up account
passwords if you are to use your PCs on a network.

If possible create the same user accounts on both machines with the same
passwords. Your networking should then work without asking for passwords,
but you will have to enter one when you start Windows XP.
