Have 2 WinXP PC's hard wired into Belkin router ... everything regarding
internet connectivity thru router for both PC's is fine ...

want to share folder/printers on 'OLD' PC with 'NEW' PC .....

had only 'Client for MS networks', 'File&printer sharing for MS networks',
'network monitor driver', & 'TCP/IP' protocol installed/selected on local
net
turned off all firewalls except router
enabled printer/file sharing on both PC's
ran net wizard on each, selecting eg, access thru 'router/gateway' type
which was found by wizard anyway ...
enabled share on couple folders, printer on OLD PC & they showed correctly
with 'hand icon' underneath ..
BUT Network Places MSHOME on each showed only 'it's own PC', ie, OLD on OLD
PC & NEW on NEW PC ..

went back & selected 'NetBios Over TCP' in WINS instead of default setting
....
then still got OLD on OLD, but NEW PC showed both OLD & NEW icons in Network
Places ..

BUT on NEW PC get errors like '\\Ccz10v01 not accessable ... network path
not found' (Ccz10v01 name of OLD PC) ...... trying to access OLD PC on net

I know something of PC's, but am newbie in networking area, but read several
internet network guides to try to learn before installing...
everything I described was done of course from admin level user accounts on
both PC's ...

Seems like this should be easier on 2 wired PC's using WinXP thru router
than has been my experience so far ...

ANY IDEAS TO GET PAST THIS ACCESS ERROR/NET PATH PROBLEM ... ???? many
thanks in advance ... jim k

Did you try to ping each PC acros your LAN as follow:

ping ip address (of the remote host)

then

ping NetbiosName (of the remote host)

YES... I SHOULD HAVE MENTIONED THAT PING RESULTS ARE:

PING FROM OLD TO ROUTER: TIMEOUT (TO)
PING FROM OLD TO OLD: OK
PING FROM OLD TO NEW: TIMEOUT

PING FROM NEW TO ROUTER: OK
PING FROM NEW TO NEW: OK
PING FROM NEW TO OLD: TIMEOUT

AGAIN, NEW SHOWS ICON FOR OLD IN NET PLACES, BUT NO INFO IS AVAILABLE, ONLY
ERROR OF '\\(name) not available ... don't have permission ..check with
server admin ... net path not found' .....

NOT SURE IF PROBLEM IS STRICTLY IN SETTING ON EITHER/BOTH PC'S OR SOMETHING
WRONG IN WAY TRYING TO ACCESS NETWORK ..

IS THERE SOME NETWORK LOGON I'M NOT DOING & IF SO, HOW DO YOU DO IT?

WOULD RUNNING A PRODUCT LIKE 'NETWORK MAGIC' ON EACH PC TAKE CARE OF THESE
KINDS OF NETWORK SETUP PROBLEMS FOR NEWBIES LIKE ME OR AM I JUST AS LIKELY

Hi
ping old to old OK and ping new to new OK .... only meens that TCPIP is
installed on both PC.

ping new to router OK indicate that the gateway on new seem to be corectly
set.
PING OLD TO ROUTER TIMEOUT 100% LOST PACKET seem to indicate that the
gateway setting on old is wrong...
So, what is the router IP address ?
what is the gateway IP address on OLD ?
what is the NETMASK on OLD ?

IPCONFIG RESULTS ARE SAME FOR EACH PC EXCEPT FOR HOST NAMES, PC IP
ADDRS, NETCARD DATA :
DIM8100 IS 192.168.2.3 XPS400 IS 192.168.2.2
ROUTER IP IS 192.168.2.1 (SETUP ADDRS)
GATEWAY ADDRS IS LISTED AS 192.168.2.1 ALSO
NETMASK LISTED AS 255.255.255.0
DHCP & DNS SERVERS ARE 68.168.240.26 , 68.168.240.27

ROUTER SETUP SHOWS 'BELKIN' (set in router LAN settings) AS 'LOCAL DOMAIN
NAME' WHICH IS DNS SUFFIX ON BOTH IPCONFIG'S ...

Internet access works fine for both PC's .. but as for MSHOME Workgroup:

AGAIN, NEW(XPS400) 'SEES' OLD(DIM8100) ON MSHOME NETWORK BUT WHEN YOU TRY
EG, GETTING PROPERTIES OF 'DIM8100', YOU GET 'SERVER DIM8100 COULD NOT BE
FOUND' ...

New PC 'Xps400' pings router,DHCP&DNS servers ok but TO's on DIM8100 (Old
PC)
DIM8100 doesn't see Xps400 in on MSHOME and all pings time out ..

tcp/ip properties are same for both pc's ... obtaining ip & dns
automatically,
IP Settings: DHCP enabled is only entry
DNS: Append primary ..... DNS suffixes is checked
Register addrs in DNS is checked
WINS: Enable LMhosts is checked
Netbios over TCP
Is there some manual TCP/IP setting adjustment needed in PC's?
What really is significance of 'Belkin' local domain default name setting?
Is there some kind of logon needed I'm not doing?

Answer to these questions :

When you are loged on DIM8100, can you ping 192.168.2.2 ?
when you are loged on DIM8100, can you ping 192.168.2.1 ?
Is there a led on each ethernet card ?
What is the status' led on each PC while you are pinging across the LAN ?
Can you indicate if both PC are wired on a switch or on a hub or directly
wired on the router
We must fix any ping trouble before to use any hostname or MSHOME properties

Whitch kind of operating system is there on each PC ?

Paul
