Newbie Linux user - how to install Linksys WMP54g wireless card

I have a Wireless network here and at the moment I'm using Knoppix. I am
fairly familiar with Windows, and the wireless network works fine with
Windows, but Linux doesn't seem to detect the card (or maybe it does, I just
wouldn't know). How do I go about setting up a wireless network with the
card I have on Linux? Is it possible with Knoppix or do I have to have it
installed on the Hard Drive?

Thanks for any help,

Eli

PS I need very clear step by step instructions, don't assume I know anything
about Linux.

ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net

This provides a kernel module that is not part of the kernel source tree.
You will also need the windows .inf and .sys files for the drivers
associated with that device. bcmwl5.* in this case iirc. I have 2 wmp54g
and 1 wmp54gs pci cards. All work fine, although I don't do much with
them beyond WEP. There are some quirks in that I can't seem to change the
channel outside of windows. But it works for what I use it for.

Are you using knoppix from the cdrom? Or did you install it to the
harddrive?

I am using Knoppix v 3.8 booting from a CD. It has Ndiswrapper in it, and
I've already tried to use it with the bcmwl5.inf file, but I probably did it
wrong. Any way, I cannot get on the internet after doing that. Please give
step by step instructions as I haven't a clue how to use Linux properly.

It is possible that it did install the drive using ndiswrapper, but I just
don't know how to configure the card to connect to the network.

Is it possible to get this card working? or do I have to find another
distribution of Linux or something?

Before you give up, try Linuxant. I found the wmp54G is mentioned on
their website -
http://www.linuxant.com/driverloader...2e8872c2f72638
which kind of indicates that they support that card.

You can try their software (a wrapper around the Windows driver just
like ndiswrapper) free for a month and if it works you can decide to buy
their licence...which is exactly what I did after struggling for some
days unsuccessfully trying to get my wireless card to work with
ndiswrapper. From install to getting my card to work took less than an
hour in the end - so I bought their licence!

Thing is, I don't know enough about Linux to know how to install this.

I can't remember the installation being anything too linux specific. It
was just a matter of following the instructions carefully (understanding
can come later!). Anyway start reading here -
http://www.linuxant.com/driverloader/

There are a number of links on the left side of their page which you
should read. Treat the whole thing as a mini project. It may turn out
that your card is not supported but at least you have tried and not
given up at the first hurdles.
