I have Mepis 6.0 installed on my HP Pavilion dv8000

I first log in as root
next I unpack ndiswrapper.tar
after this I cd to the source files

I do the first step which the instructions say is type "make distclean"

now I type "make install" and I get this error

make -C driver install
make[1]: Entering directory `/root/ndiswrapper-1.31/driver'
Can't find kernel build files in /lib/modules/2.6.15-26-386/build;
give the path to kernel build directory with
KBUILD=<path> argument to make
make[1]: *** [prereq_check] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/ndiswrapper-1.31/driver'
make: *** [install] Error 2

Any help is much appreciated

When you installed your Linux distribution, did you install the kernel
headers & source? Doesn't sound like it.

You *should* have something like this:

[david@sled351]$ ls /lib/modules/<your-kernel-version>/build
abi crypto init Makefile Rules.make
arch Documentation ipc mm scripts
configs drivers kernel net tmp_include_depends
COPYING fs lib README
CREDITS include MAINTAINERS
REPORTING-BUGS
