Newbie Help Question, Going wireless with Existing Wired Connection

I currently have cable broadband and have all the computers hooked up
through a Linksys Etherfast BEFSR41 ver. 2 wired 4 port router, My
basic question is, Is it possible to make this wired router into a
wireless router?? I am not looking to hook up all of the computers
wirelessly, just a laptop. I do know that I want to go with 802.11a
or 802.11g standard and not 802.11b as the last standard is so slow
and so much intereference from cordless phones and the like. Is it
possible to get something like a wirelss bridge or hub that will just
connect into my current wired router and then using a wireless pcmica
card for the laptop to connect to the internet? I would hate to
purchase another router as the ones that are for 802.11a and g are so
very expensive, almost $200 for the cheapest one I can find. The
laptop card I am considering is a Trimode one which can work on all of
the current 802.11 standards. I hope to hear some good advice on how
to go about what I am trying to do or if I won't be able to do as I
wish. All advice greatly appreciated.

Your point about possible interference from a 2.4GHz phone is a valid
concern if you have that type of phone in use, but I don't think "is so
slow" is. I'd be more than a little surprised if your broadband
connection is actually faster than the 6-7Mb throughput possible on
802.11b. But what frequency do you think 802.11g works on? That same
cordless phone would do the same damage on "g". These faster standards
are mostly for file sharing between your computers on your LAN, not
necessarily sharing an internet connection.

I'm interested to see if someone has a suggestion that will allow you to
connect another client by wireless to your present router. I'm thinking
you'll need to do internet connection sharing or the like if you won't
replace the router with a wireless one.

Thanks for your input about the 802.11g being on the same frequency as
802.11b, I had mainly before got my information and advice to go with
the 11g or 11a since it was way faster and better than the 11b. We
currently don't have any of the 2.4ghz phones in the home only the 900
mhz but it is quite possible that the neighbors in this townhouse
complex does have these 2.4ghz phones and they do often go outside and
talk on them away from their homes, I am basically wanting to use the
wireless network for now just for the laptop so my wife can use it for
mainly surfing the net, no major download of files but also to be able
to connect to my other desktop computers, I did come across a Netgear
HE102NA wireless link if that is the correct term and from what I
gather I can connect it to the wired router and then put the wireless
card in the laptop and should be able to connect to the net that way.
