Newbie help please ref networking

We used to get b/band on both computers using Lan. It then became available
only on one machine (dialup only on mine)
It seemed to improve when Norton's f/wall was disabled last week - but now
this dose'nt work any more. Any help would be appreciated.

Have you set the machine that is linked ot the BB connection as a "gateway" on the
other machine?

It may be the the firewall blocked and then broke your settings.
Its better to set them manually if you can, rather than rely on DCHP

Post your settings if you know them and I'll try to let you know what to do next.

For example can the machines "see" each other on the LAN?

I wouldn't know where to look, someone else set the machines up. Newbie with
L-platz.

Hi Pete

I think your set-up is using a technique called Internet Connection Sharing
but I need to be sure before I can advise you further.

To that end here are 3 questions.

1.
How are the two machines physically connected together?
Is there a cable directly linking the two computers or is there an
intervening box?
If there is a box what is it called? Is it perhaps a Hub a Switch or a
Router.

Where does the Broadband connection go? To a modem connected to one of the
computers or to any intervening box? Is it ADSL (BT phone line) or Cable
(Telewest / NTL)

Finally this may seem a chore but it will help us to see what is going on.
Go to Start - programs - MS-DOS prompt or Command prompt (oh yes another
question, what operating system are the two machines using?)

Anyway you should get a black window with a prompt
Type the following then press return

ipconfig /all > c:\config.txt

Do this on both machines

Now double click on "My computer" then your C: drive. Look for a file
called config or config.txt
Double click on it and it will open in notepad.
Click 'Edit' and 'Select all' to highlight all the text
Press Ctrl + c to copy text to clipboard
Open a Reply Group window to this post and paste in the text with Ctrl + v

Now do the same with the config.txt on the other machine. If the LAN is not
working (is it?) copy it onto a floppy disk.
Anyhow what I need is the contents of the two files.

As per 'It's Me' post below, I think I got the info and reset my two IP
addresses on the main computer :-

Ethernet adapter 192.168.0.236
PPI adapter speedtouch connection 82.3.64.193

LAN cable - no router.

Both have Thompson modems - one Alcatel the second is Speedtouch.
ASDL BT.

I'll get the other info (Q 3)when the computer is free.

Hang on a mo...
You are saying that each has its OWN adsl USB modem, ultimatly connected to
the SAME phone line???
And that arrangment worked in the past?

No, previously only the alcatel was connected to the main computer - I now
realise we should have purchased a router modem.
