Bear with me- I have this MDK9.1 linux box working ok. Almost. It is
used to share the internet connection to a couple of other PCs in our
small office. That's working great. The IP of the PC is 192.168.1.1,
which is the gateway the other PCs use, of course.
I have SAMBA installed. I have no problem accessing shared files & data
on the XP boxes hooked into the network. This works great.
smbclient -L localhost indicates what I configured on the Linux box,
including the drive partition I want to use for shared files. Samba user
names and permissions are configured.
Now, the problem. If, on the WinXP I go to open the Samba server, which
I can see in the list of workgroup members, I get "Network Path not found"
I now note that from the WinXP boxes I cannot ping 192.168.1.1, which I
suspect is some or all of the problem. From my basic understanding of
these matters I find that confusing, because other aspects of the TCP/IP
network are working, ie they'd have to access the address 192.168.1.1,
wouldn't they?
I'd really appreciate any hints and tips as to what should check to
access 192.168.1.1 from the WinXP clients.
BTW, it has been suggested to me to use a second NIC for SAMBA,
retaining the other for ICS etc? Is that a valid suggestion?
TIA
