Newbie has Networking hassles

Bear with me- I have this MDK9.1 linux box working ok. Almost. It is
used to share the internet connection to a couple of other PCs in our
small office. That's working great. The IP of the PC is 192.168.1.1,
which is the gateway the other PCs use, of course.

I have SAMBA installed. I have no problem accessing shared files & data
on the XP boxes hooked into the network. This works great.

smbclient -L localhost indicates what I configured on the Linux box,
including the drive partition I want to use for shared files. Samba user
names and permissions are configured.

Now, the problem. If, on the WinXP I go to open the Samba server, which
I can see in the list of workgroup members, I get "Network Path not found"

I now note that from the WinXP boxes I cannot ping 192.168.1.1, which I
suspect is some or all of the problem. From my basic understanding of
these matters I find that confusing, because other aspects of the TCP/IP
network are working, ie they'd have to access the address 192.168.1.1,
wouldn't they?

I'd really appreciate any hints and tips as to what should check to
access 192.168.1.1 from the WinXP clients.

BTW, it has been suggested to me to use a second NIC for SAMBA,
retaining the other for ICS etc? Is that a valid suggestion?

TIA

Hi Pierre,

I just recently set up Samba on my RedHat 9 box and discovered that my
firewall (IPChains) was not allowing traffic to flow through on ports
137-139.

Once I enabled that everything worked fine.

If I'm not mistaken Windows XP has it's own internal firewall right?
Could it be interfering with communications between the two boxes?

Good luck!

mandrake default firewall is shorewall..

the easiyest way is to execute the firewall configuration program of
your mandrake control center ...

you will see check boxes for http , ftp , etc..

write on the line the ports you want to open to the outside:

(for samba) 137/tcp 138/tcp 139/tcp 137/udp 138/udp 139/udp

if it still doesnt work look at your smb.conf syntax...

dont foget to chmod 777 the shared folder

NO! These ports need to be open on the LAN, they should NOT be open to
the OUTSIDE world.

IIRC when sharing files you have the share permissions as well as your
nix permissions - it can become moderately confusing. For general
purposes 777 isn't necessary or desirable.
