Newbie - connecting two PCs win 98 se

Hey Folks,

I know pretty much nothing about networking. I have 2 pcs on win98se I'd
like to swap data between.

Both have Ethernet cards and work with my new belkin wireless router which
is used mostly
for my vista laptop. I understand from reading posts the vista machine
wouldn't interface with the other machines anyway so getting the 98ses
connecting is the goal right now.

Is there a simple way to link the two computers?
What do I need to get this done.

You haven't described WHAT type of network you wish to create..

IF wireless: do you have the necessary wireless adapters for the 98boxes?
[this presumes you have the wireless attached to the VISTA computer]

IF wired: do you have an additional router or exactly how do you intend to
connect the computers?

IF the 98boxes are close: you can connect ONE to the wireless router [via a
wireless USB device OR a second wireless adapter card] and use a cross-over
cable to attach the second to the first. The first would be the ICS server,
while the second would be the client. The *server*, however, MUST be running
to use the ICS connection.

*IF both 98boxes already have wireless adapters: put both into the *same
work group*; both receiving IP from the wireless router. This would place
them into the same net range.

Make sure your firewalls have been configured to allow sharing within the
network AND that you have installed *File and Printer Sharing* on both 98
boxes WITH some shared folders.

thanks for helping out MEB.

neither 98se machines have a wireless card. they both have Ethernet cards.

so are you saying that with a crossover cable i can connect the 2 98se
machines together?

that's fine with me. right now they are connected to a wireless modem but
only through the Ethernet
outs of the router.

please forgive my ignorance in this matter. i've never networked two
computers before.

Right.
Again, what do you want to achieve? Is it both 98s networked AND with
wireless access?

YES, however, with only one ethernet adapter [and no wireless USB] per
computer you will not have Internet/wireless access.

UHM, you continue to indicate a wireless device... so what are you
presently doing,, moving the wireless device from one computer to the other
for Internet access... or EXACTLY how is your present network setup? I
realize you can see it, but I can't, so you have to describe your
setup/network.

So where is the wireless base unit [modem] and which computer is the MASTER
[is it the VISTA?]?
BTW, VISTA *CAN* network *to* a 98 computer, its the 98 computer accessing
VISTA that is the problem.

Does the wireless modem have more than one RJ45 connection?
IF SO you have a *router/switch*, which is really what you want. *IF* this
is what you have, then move the wireless base unit to an area which can be
accessed by (at least) TWO of the computers via hardwire/cabling [50' of
pre-made CAT5/6 cable cost about $19.00 US]. Network the third computer via
a USB or other wireless adapter IF it can't be hard-wired.

*IF*, as you appear to indicate, both 98 computers are ALREADY connected
via the wireless *router*, then you are already networked. All you need to
do is add *File and Printer Sharing* to *both* computers [in Control Panel >
Network] AND then share some folders on BOTH computers. Make sure both
computers are in the same "workgroup" and obtaining their IPS *FROM* the
router.

Thanks so much for your guidance MEB.

Your last paragraph summed up my setup.
All three computers are now networked and sharing data and a printer.
The only snag is that the win 98se machines can see the vista laptop, but
not access it.
No big deal. My setup is lightyears ahead of where it was week ago.

Glad you got it working, and thanks for posting back with the results.

VISTA access - well if you searched the NET you found most feel it is
impossible. Others use various kludges, old protocols, or manual
modifications;; or combinations.
I won't attempt to provide advise for that as it depends heavily upon the
OS version, willingness to modify, and other abilities.
