Hi there,

I'm fairly new to all of this so please excuse me if this is a rather
basic question!

I've got a small business with 4 pc's which I have connected to a
windows 2003 server.

I've assigned my server an IP address of 192.168.1.1, and my pc's
192.168.1.2 through to 4. My question is... what should the default
gateway be? Is it the servers IP address? And should the default
gateway on the server be it's own IP address?

Regards,

Jason

the default gateway is the machine assigned as a router. so if you have a
router somewhere in the network, you should assign its ip-address as a default
gateway. You can use the server as a router for the workstations, but the
server has to have a way out as well. to be able to move the packets on to
another network. If you have for instance an ADSL device in the network you
should give its address as default gateway. (the address of the ADSL router
should be:192.168.1.x is it something other it will not work.

for a nice idea of networkcomponents: http://www.warriorsofthe.net/
it will give you a goood idea of what each device does...

this will help a bit, not everything, but it will enlighten a lot on the use
of devices.

greetings

Eric

Does the windows 2003 server have two NICs in it attached to two different
networks (your internal LAN and the outside world) or just one?

I mean : with the link: watch the movie: it is fun to watch and completely
instructive...

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I do have an ADSL modem/router attached to the
server so I'll use the IP address of that for the default gateway.

And Todd... yes I do have 2 NICs. 1 for the LAN and 1 for the ADSL
modem.

Regards,

Jason

then you have guessed the sollution: make the server the def gw for the clients,
make the ADSL the def gw for the server.

Be Aware that if your clients have to go onto the internet you have to enable
Routing and remote access (RRAS) on the server as well.
in you case i would advice to enable a internet connection sharing server
through routing and remote access, (the other option is to create a separate
route for your 192.168.1.0 network on the ADSL router. in that case you have
to create a route that goes like: for the 192.168.1.0 network route packets
to the NIC connected to the ADSL. in this case just enable RRAS as a router.

good luck

eric
