I am using Mandrake 9.2 with a NetComm NB1300 ADSL modem which includes a
router - represented by the manufacturer as the minimum for Linux, and via
Ethernet only, not USB. I have upgraded the kernel to 2.4.22-21mdk.

So I installed a 10/100MBps card. Mandrake configured it like a dream, but
Win 98 SE won't even look at the card's supplied driver. The "driver" for
Linux merely says that the kernel modules will be O.K.

I have a fake DNS via dyndns and am running an Apache server from home.
This works O.K. until I install the GuardDog firewall. Then I can no
longer access my server. I see mentions of port forwarding and keeping Port
80 open. Web browsing is unaffected, and HTTP is expressly enabled in the
firewall.

Should I go out and buy a book on networking? There is no actual network,
just a solo computer, connecting to the modem via DHCP.

On the question of port forwarding, there is a little "network between the
computer and the modem, with an IP address supplied by the modem.

Let's explore. If we don't find something pleasant, we will at least find
something new.

Does your modem support bridge mode? That would make things easier, I
think, then all you would have to do is run rp-pppoe on your modem and
swap your firewall rules from eth0 to ppp0. Otherwise, I believe you
have to enable port forwarding on your modem, so that all requests for
port 80 on your modem's IP get forwarded to your NIC's IP. Not all
modems do that, you'd have to check (mine doesn't, so I use bridging).
If none of that is the case, have you set the firewall to allow both
incoming and outgoing connections on port 80?
I'm a total newbie myself, so don't be surprised if someone else tells
you something completely different, but I hope I helped...
