I havent been doing much professionally the past year with 802.11b
networks. The last client I did over a year ago I installed Ornico
Gold cards with encryption and set up a couple of cheapee access
points to roam (Microsoft SUCKS).. No problems, they never called for
help and ocassional reboot of their Netgear Routers and Bridges was
all that was necessary. At the time the cards cost $70.- and the
prices were falling, DLink was coming out with some cheap cards.. Now
I go to purchase the Gold cards and they cost $100.- and no plug for
the attenna.. Everybody is talking about the 802.11g standard (WHT THE
HELL HAPPENED TO 802.11a?) What have I missed? Why are the prices so
high? What has changed?

Can you get the GOLD Cards anymore? WHere is a good place to buy them
or are they not necessary? Have the Prisim II cards caught up in
relability?

The "Orinoco b-gold" from Dell $44.10

PCMall Shows $83.99, but they have "please call" in the "usually ships by".

I think the supply of Orinoco Gold, B only, is dwindling.

802.11g is a new technology using 2.4GHz band for speed up to 54Mbps; it is
backward compatible with 802.11b. It just got ratified this month.

802.11a still exists. If the 2.4GHz band is noisy, 802.11a is still a
consideration. Tri-mode devices are available now.

New technology is usually more expensive. When 802.11b first came out, its
price was about 3 times the price now.
