WPA is definitely more secure than WEP, which has been demonstrably
crackable for years.
WPA, which is just now being deployed and is not yet available in all
products, is an interim step toward the official IEEE standard of 802.11i,
which is still being worked on. While not an IEEE standard itself, WPA is
the creature of the WiFi Alliance trade association. The industry couldn't
wait for the full-blown 802.11i after WEP was shown to be unreliable for
serious encryption.
Cracking WEP still is not trivial, but it is doable. It just takes time.
In the short run, before you can deploy WPA, you should change your WEP key
frequently. And don't buy any equipment if its vendor does not promise WPA
support in an upgrade.
