You haven't given us any information about your router or your
computers, so I can't give you specific answers, however:

1. Go into your router's configuration. You normally do this via a
browser. Refer to the router's manual for exact instructions. Go to the
wireless settings and change the SSID to something other than the
default. For instance, if you have a Linksys the default is "Linksys".
Change this to something unique like "shannonwings" or whatever. ;-)

2. Also in your router's wireless configuration, set an encryption key.
WPA is more secure than WEP, but all your hardware must support it. In
either case, set an encryption key.

3. Now go to the computer with the wireless adapter. You should see your
network in there. Yes, you will see other people's wireless networks.
That is the way wireless works and the reason you want encryption. Now
configure your connection by putting in the encryption key (not the
passphrase if you used one) to match the one on the router. Set your
wireless connection as the preferred one.

have you added your network to the list of wireless connections that Windows
looks for?
In your router config page, make sure you've given your wireless network a
name & encryption key, and then add it to the wireless network list.
