Hi all,
Newbie, possibly stupid question, here.
I have just got a laptop from work and I want to link it wirelessly with my
home desktop. The question is what do I need to do this?
I want to share files and play games between the two, and possibly acces
the internet from the laptop, but this is not essential.
My internet is from NTL (cable always on) if this makes any difference.
I have been looking through several websites and am getting more and more
confused, so a simple answer would be great. Also how do you set them up as
I have no idea about setting up a network.
Thanks in advance for any info given,
Neil.

You need to go to an office department store such as Staples and
purchase 3 things.

-A wireless router
-a wireless desktop "card" (for your PC)
-a PCMCIA card (for your laptop)

You need to install the two cards and plug in the router

The installation software that comes with the hardware should set up
your computer to share an internet connection.

To share files:

Email me and tell me what operating system you have and I'll get you
some instructions on file and printer sharing

PCI wifi cards are very hit and miss with connection and inteference,
I have noticed in the past that the metal casing of the case can cause
inteference to the signal. If you have a USB connection on the front
of your desktop, then go for USB wireless adapter for desktop and
PCMCIA for laptop.

Why does the OP need a router when the OP can just buy a PCI wireless
NIC and a PCMCIA wireless NIC, and use ad-hoc mode? Bit of a waste of
money, surely?

Get a wireless router and a PCMCIA WiFi card for your laptop. Plug
the router into your modem/set-top box, and the PC into the router
(you'll need an extra ethernet cable to do that). Set up the router
using the PC. Plug the PC card into the laptop and set it up - there
will probably be a setup wizard on the CD that comes with the card.

Something like these will do the job:
