Hi,

I am looking to set up a wireless network for sharing my cable broadband and wondered if anyone had any
comments on the best kit for home use and which adapter to use, USB or PCI.I know that using a USB connection direct to the cable modem does result in some loss of performance.

I am looking to use it on one PC (Athlon 2400, 512mb ram) at the moment, with the modem being downstairs and the PC sighted upstairs, expanding to a second PC very soon and then to a laptop, making a max of 3 machines on the network.

The makes that I have looked at so far are Linksys, Belkin and Actiontec

Thanks

SteveB

Steve,

I have a Linksys BEFW11S4 v2 WAP installed in my house. It works great!
I've used a combination of Wi-Fi cards (both with laptops and PPC's) with no
problems at all....plus it's at the price is right these days!!!

Recommend standard PCI NIC for the "main computer". This way you know you
have at least one "hard wired" computer to the net in-case the wireless is
having problems. For laptops and Pocket PC's PCMCIA and CF work the best.

One thing to keep in mind with a split level installation is the placement
of your WAP. Signal strength is degraded as it travels through walls so
I've noticed slower speeds way back in the corners of my house.

Good luck!
Jay

I also have been using a BEFW11S4 v2 for the past year and it has worked
flawlessly. It is a 802.11b device. I just upgraded to a US Robotics
Wireless Turbo Router USR8054 which is a 802.11g device. It seems to be
working fine it's just that the power and status lights are yellow instead
of green. Anyway what I was going to say is, if you want to go with the
BEFW11S4 v2 I'll let you have it at a good price.
