New landline/bulldog line

Hi,

I have a few questions as you can see from the subject line;

I'm a student moving into a shared house in september and am wanting to
get broadband. I can get NTL, which is definately cheapest but I would
like to explore the ADSL options aswell.

>From what the BT website says a new line is 74.99 installation and a 12

month minimum contract which would make it unviable straight away.

I don't think that there is an existing bt landline installed at the
house and if it is then it definately doesn't come into my room. If I
do find that there is an inactive line entering another part of the
house I can get it reactivated for free, right? is the 12 month
contract still required? and if the line enters another room will bt be
happy to move it for free or would I have to pay for it?

I'm just wondering if there is any sort of student offer available
aswell?

Finally I also saw the bulldog offer which everyone is saying to keep
away from and except for the extra speed (if it actually works) I don't
get anything more than NTL broadband. However if I was to try bulldog
(I believe they do a trial?) and decided I didn't want it there would
be a telephone line left. Who installs bulldogs telephone lines? I
guess they are bt wholesale? If so can't BT retail just reactivate it
as an existing BT line or is it not that simple?

TIA
Rich

If there is a BT line entering the building, anther option might be to
subscribe to ADSL on that line, and plug a wireless router into the ADSL.

So that it's a shared line.

Hello...

with ntl 1mb broadband at £9.99 per month for a year currently i'd go with
that for now, nothing will beat it at the moment in terms of easiness (both
installation and sharing wise)

Ys, in these cases its almost always free

>is the 12 month contract still required?

Taking over an existing line means a 3 month contract.

However, even if you had a 12 month contract with BT, you can cancel it at
any time for a small penalty charge depending on how long your contract had
to run (maximum £18)

Depends, you would probably have to pay or fit an extension yourself.

If its for ADSL etc - have you considered wireless?

Not with BT..

Yes, BT fit Bulldog lines and if you leave Bulldog you can "go back" to BT
and they will use the same physical line.

If you do want to sign up with Bulldog would you mind quoting my referral
code? -just quote "bdol 1734734" when signing up online (under "How did you
hear about Bulldog?/Referred by a Friend") or just mention it while ordering
by telephone (and please drop me an email and let me know!).

Regards
Sunil

Just when you mention phone lines and students, a mate of mine had a
novel way of getting a phone line installed for free. The student flat
next door had a phone line but the flat was vacant. He crawled across
the roof space to get into the next door flat, disconnected the cable
coming into the flat, pushed it back out the hole in the wall. Noted the
phone number of the line which had been written on the phone. He then
routed the cable into his flat and fitted the master socket. He then
phoned BT to reactivate the phone line. They tried to confirm the
address which was obviously wrong. He said the phone line was here when
he moved in and he was a student. BT changed the account details to
reflect the now corrected address!!! LOL.

I sat back and watched this all in amazement.....

Regards
Glenn...

in the style of someone watching a car being stolen from outside their
window, no doubt.

So if someone was stealing a car, you would go out ant try and stop
them, possably risking being knifed or something. I think not. Thats
what insurance is for...

yes

if it was your car the claim might be interesting if you were watching
it happen and did nothing. "Contributory negligence" springs to mind.

Contributory negligence would apply if one had say left the car open or
left the keys in the ignition. Taking reasonable steps to secure your
property, reasonable care of the same property and reporting any crime
within good time will negate any claim of contributory negligence.
