Thanks

DirecWay sells a package, intended for RV parks and such, combining a WiFi
hotspot and a dish.

Which new modem? I've done the direcway 4000 and 4020 setups. Hooked
both up to WRT51ab and WRT54g wireless routers with no probs. Although,
just about everything I've done, they say I can't do, but I did it
anyway. <G>

My experience is that they have the typical low cost support answer:
"We don't support that."
Even long ago, they had an "unsupported" web page dealing with home
networking via ICS when they required the internal cards.

What did they tell you you could not do on your own?

The only thing they said I could not do on my own was the dish
installation itself and the 4020 authorization process. (Which I ended
up doing anyway, because the rep had never done it before and didn't
know anything about computers, much less networking.) So first thing I
had to do was get his USB ports working on his laptop, then fix and
upgrade his windows. Then he left me a disk with the authorization
process, since he didn't want to drive all the way back.

The rest was a network configuration that they said would not work.
Plugging in two routers, using a LinkSys router as the DHCP server.
Accessing the 4020 from the WLAN port on the LinkSys router, which
eliminated the need for ICS altogether. (IMHO, ICS is like a wordpad
application.)

You're right about support. There really was none. I had to lookup
everything myself on their gear. On the plus side, once it's setup, it's
awesome. So far running about 6 months or so, with 6 users and no
problems. The whole thing is not cheap, even with the LinkSys router.
The 4020 was $700.00 with them sending out their rep. That's on top of
the 4000 system which was about $1500 bucks, then there's the $100+ per
month business charge for using their business package with the 4020.

I wasn't thinking about the installation. I accept that being done be an
installer because of the transmitter.

The only installations I've seen were older, with one or two cards
installed in the PC. ICS was needed for home networking there. The newer
modems I thought were standalone, so that you could connect a router.
I wouldn't expect ICS to be needed in that case. You mention 4020,
but I was looking at the new DW6000, which is "Self Hosting", and has
an "Ethernet connection - provides easy connection to your computer or
home network".
