New D-Link router - won't allow me to connect through windows

i live in a house where several people are connected wirelessly to our
internet via a D-link router. This router is new, and while my connection was
fine with the old routers, i cannot connect using this one. My housemates
say that i need to disable the thing where windows connects me to the router
& use something else, but i'm not sure how to connect without using windows.
When i use windows, it says that i am connected but i cant access the
internet at all and there is a red cross by the symbol on my desktop which
means that i am not connected. I am not sure what to do, can anyone help?
