hi,

i have a single server set up which has an address based on the server
farm's domain - server1.serversupplier.com

this server carries out virtual hosting for a couple of dozen domains
including my own - say it's called example.com

i have control of the dns records for all these domains.

i now have 2 new servers set up in a new server farm and i've been allocated
8 IP addresses - 1 network - 1 as a gateway - 5 for server addresses and 1
for broadcast.

i now need to name these servers (for setting up apache etc) so that the
servers has a resolvable address.

can i set them up as server2.example.com and server3.example.com - after all
i can set up DNS records for my domain (example.com) to point to the server
IP addresses.

i.e. what can i use for the domain part of the server names - my own domain,
one from the new server farm, or should i set up a new domain?

sorry if this is obvious but i'd like to be clear before i continue.

thanks for any help - kev

to answer my own post after a day's reading.....

the record for server1.example.com can be set to the IP address of the
server.

the issue of reverse lookups needs to be resolved.

basically - the server farm has responsibility for the reverse lookup of the
IP address - and this was set to a name of their choosing ( a temp type
name based on the IP address - e.g h123-321-23.isp.com).

reverse lookups are carried out via PTR records in the NS.

i needed to ask the server farm to change the PTR record of my server to be
the same as the name i have given it under my own domain
(server1.example.com).

this is now the definitive name of the server and mail program and web
server programs should be set so that the server name is
server1.example.com

HTH someone

i needed to
