Hi,

Hope somebody with some good BT knowledge might be able to help me
here.

I am moving into a new house and BT are going to install the line at
the end of next week as being a new house it has never had a service
before. All the internal cabling is done by the house builder but BT
need to liven the service up..anyway. I have been given my new number
when I called at the weekend to request the new line, but BT says I
have to wait until the line is live (after the engineer visit) before
I can order broadband which seems crazy.

When I call the number it rings and when I enter my number into ISP
availaibty checkers it recongnises the number and lets me order the
service, if I order the broadband service now before the engineer
visits on site will I get a problem?

If I call the number it rings so does this mean that the work at the
local exchange has been complete?

Hope someone has some answers?

Thanks.

If you mean you need your extensions connected, you can do those, or the
builder. BT will charge an extra charge (per socket) for commisioning
them.

No it means that the line can be tested before progressing the ADSL
order, quite sensible AFAICS

You spin the wheel & take your chances. What happens if there is a
cabling problem? Not unknown on some sites especially with all the
other services digging the ground up (I have known one site where the
cable feeding it was cut by the water board because the cable was in the
way & of course they denied all knowledge, even though there was this
massive hole with the BT duct & cable at each end & a water pipe thru
the middle). You'll be paying for a service which you're not receiving
& jumping up & down blaming BT for something which is not of their
doing.

No it means that the number has been activated in the exchange equipment
nothing more & nothing less, it may still require connecting to the
external network.

Well there's some answers, hope that they help explain the why's &
wherefores. What you have missed is that there are/were a couple of
ISP's which offered same day activation, but I'm afraid that you may be
to far into the provision process already & after a hard day trying to
do the impossible I can't recall the names of any of them for which I
appologise..

Having worked in provisioning for one of said ISPs I'd have to agree -
the OP should just wait it out. For a simultaneous PSTN/ADSL, you need
to leave about 10-14 days. If your phone activation date (i.e the date
you take over the telephone account at that property) is sooner than
then, you *could* cancel and reorder as a simultaenous delivery with
cooperation of your ISP of choice, but if an engineer is due to come in
to sort out the wiring I really wouldn't try it, way too many things
that can go wrong.
