New ADSL package, set-up/connection problems - HELPPP!!!!!

Just went to set up our new ADSL deal at home last night, company called
plus.net. *Set up fast
internet access at home in just a few easy steps* Fcuk THAT!

Did everything they said, it connected, 'learned', I got the browser to
launch, then went to set up E-mail, said I'd done it OK, then kept asking me
for the password to re-connect. Then the machine froze - had to do a cold
reboot by pulling the power plug as the power switch wouldn't work either.

Tried again, 'same shit'. Did a full driver
uninstall, re installed, 'same shit'. 20 minutes of call waiting, through to
the (thankfully local-ish) help line. Guy says it must be probs at our end,
check that all phone line appliances are on the filters they sent,
especially the satellite box, then
let him know how it goes. So I disconnected *everything* from the lines
except the
modem and its filter (asked him if this would tell us what we needed to
know, he said go for it)
- same problem(s) again - disconnects, won't reconnect
'cannot connect to the machine at the other end' and stuff like that. Spent
until 11:30 last night, then another hour this a.m. - totally pissed off
with it now! Grrrr... ;-(

Someone has suggested that
these modems do not like phone line extension cables, and that a special
kind is needed, but the install and set-up paperwork/disc says nothing about
that, and shows one set-up using ordinary extension cables, I'm pretty
certain.

Virtually plug-and-play my arse!

So, if anyone here has any advice/knowledge they'd care to share with me
before my next help-line call so I can be better prepared, I would be most
grateful.

Cheers folks,

Some problems with ADSL are simple setup errors, or poor quality lines.

I presume you are using a usb modem? The modem probably has two lights, one
of the lights will be called 'sync' light. When you turn the PC on, and it
gets to windows, does the light flash and then stay solid? continuesly
flash, or nothing?

If it continuesly flashes, the chances are you have a problem that either
the line to your house is not up to broadband, or the wiring within the
house is not up to broadband.

To check to see if it is your internal wiring, move the pc close enough to
the master socket for the cable to reach from the usb modem. At the master
socket (the one probably closest to your front door) it will have two
screws, undo the screws and the front bottom half will pull out.

You will see on the socket in the wall there is another place you can put
your cable in (make sure you have the filter on the cable, or better still,
use an old modem cable that would have came with the computer, which has a
small end for the usb modem and a standard bt ), this isolates the broadband
signal from the rest of the house. If the light now stays solid, then you
need an adsl faceplate, they can be had on ebay for less £5.00.

does that help???

Yes, sorry for omitting that bit.

Modem has 3 lights. Left most comes on with the power, centre would be sych
I presume (comes on, stays solid), the right most says 'DSL' next to it, and
that comes on and off seemingly with data transfer, goes out when the
connection drops.

The line to the house has been tested, apparently, and has come up good
enough (they wouldn't connect us/activate the acct. until that was done, we
were told - we were informed as soon as it had been completed that we were
good to go). I've seen no figures myself though.

Thanks - this has been suggested to me and makes sense.

Actually on the back wall, but I'll let you off that one ',;~}~

Well, if you have the solid middle light, you can ignore most of what i
said..... Your line is perfectly fine.

Go through the stages for setting up your internet. You dont need the pissy
cd that came with your isp, just your adsl login and password, and set up a
new dial ip connection choosing the usb modem.

If the machine crashes when you try to connect, it might be a usb problem on
your machine. Various solutions exist, the usb modems can suck to much power
from the board causing instability...

The best solution is to get yourself a ethernet based modem, instead of usb.
Ethernet is much more stable and looks like an oversized telephone cable, it
doesnt involve any extra drivers (assuming your computer has a network port
built in, most new ones do, and you can buy one for about three pounds if
not).

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=48449

this modem will do the business

And, if you dont have a network port on your pc, get this

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=31095

Together this will sort out any issues you have with usb drivers and a
crashing system

All working now, thanks (apart from the PC itself, which really doesn't seem
to like doing too much at once, but that's a different issue...)

Seems the connection issue actually *was* that ext. cable.

It's an old PC, full to bursting with wondows crap, too many large image
files stored all the hell over the place on it, slow drives, and IIRC, very
little memory - only seems to lock up when you ask it to do too many things
at once, while it's happily running shed-loads of unused/useless windows
shit in the background - IOW, it seriously needs cleaning up.

Thanks again Gaz - all info. that I will keep in mind as I'm sure it will be
useful in the future. For now, the set-up we have will have to do (now it's
working) - we're so damned strapped for cash ATM (no pun intended), we could
only just afford the £14.99/month for this.

Cheers, and be well.
