Hi

A friend of mine has a network of 5 machines all running NT Workstation
connected via an 8 port switch.

He also has a Dell laptop running XPSP2 Pro.

Standalone the laptop works just fine running his 3D CAD Package
(Solidworks 2004)

If he plugs his laptop into the network switch he suffers a noticeable
performance hit, particularly with graphics redrawing in SolidWorks.

As soon as he un-plugs the laptop from the network performance on th e
laptop is back to 'normal'

Can anyone offer any suggestions to this behaviour?

Odd. NT and XP play together fine. He could use Ethereal to see what
packets are going into and out of his WinXP machine - this will give a clue
as to what it's up to.

Sure none of the Windows NT machines aren't infected and hammering the XP
box as soon as they "spot it"?

Paul DS.

Peer to peer network all NT, first one to boot gets to be browse master.
Add nice new XP to the mix and if it is like 98, 2000 it sees itself as the
latest and greatest and insists that it should be master. Sound right to
anyone? I'm only guessing, my knowledge is just enough to be dangerous :-)

Well, there have been earlier issues and I think you could be on the right
track but he assures me that he has AV software running on the machines,
although I do know he's forgotten about one machine that hasn't!

There is an ISDN modem connected to one machine but it doesn't share the
connection over the network.

I think a thorough Virus and Spyware Scan is called for. Am I correct in
assuming that spyware, etc could propagate over a network even though the
internet connection isn't shared?
