Networking XP and 2K via ethernet and wifi

I've got a Netgear DG834 router, which has both ethernet and wifi. I've also
got a couple of XP machines connecting via wifi, and one 2k machine
connecting to it by ethernet. I can occasionally see the other computers
from each other, but it's not reliable, nor can I access the shared printer
on the 2k machine. Am I trying to do something that's impossible or is there
something I need to fettle? Workgroups are all set the same, file and
printer sharing turned on etc.

Brief update - after much restarting of computers and routers I can now see
the 2k machine, but I apparently don't have permission to do anything other
than see that it's on the workgroup (ie, access anything below that level
like shares).

Are you using the same User Name and Password on each machine (not
essential but easier), are they in the same work group and have you
specifically shared a folder(s)?

1) Nope. They're not all my machines - some are laptops as we're students
sharing a house (and hopefully an LJ5!).

2) Yes, MSHOME

3) Yep.

OK in theory when you try to browse to a shared folder in Explorer it
should ask you for a user name and password - you would then need to log
on as a user who is recognised by the machine you are browsing to. Sharing
each others user names/passwords may not be a good idea, perhaps each of
you could set up an account for all of the others (each account must have
a password) then use that to log on.

Sorry not sure if that's clear. If Tom, Dick and Harry are sharing the
house then Tom needs to set up accounts for Dick and Harry, Dick for Tom
and Harry and Harry for Tom and Dick.

Presumably each machine is using an IP address from the same range, i.e.
all 192.168.1.x - if not they need to!

Is there not a way to share passwordless?

No - no password no share.

The facts, although interesting, are irrelevant

There must be some way as I've used umpteen PCs at various offices where you
just log in and you have access to shared drives.

of course there is. in win2k just give the "everyone" group the
priveleges you want - read/write etc.
under XP just share it out and say yes to the prompt that asks you if
you're sure you want to do this.

Right. Both 2k and XP PCs are on the same workgroup. Both have file and
printer sharing on. Both PCs share user names and passwords. I still can't
access one from the other - 2k machine thinks it's the only one on the
network, the XP machine can see the 2k machine but can't access it. 2k
machine is the one running the printer...
