Networking without broadband.

I am waiting for my broadband to be installed.

In the meantime I have aquired my wireless router and network cards.

All products from Netgear.

My question is: Can I install the router and network cards without being
connected to broadband. Can I install the products so that each compuer can
see the other via the router and then, when broadband is activated, just
plug it in and away we go.

Yes.

You can plug it all in now, if you get all your filters connected,
modem plugged in and the details entered the ADSL will automatically
pick up the line as soon as it is activated at the exchange which is
often a couple of days before the actual activation date you've been
given.
You can set up all your PCs for file and print sharing too without the
need for an ADSL connection to be active, all your doing is using the
hub on the router.

Make sure you enable and configure the router's DHCP server so it can
provide all the PCs with IP addresses. Typically you would configure it to
supply a range of addresses such as 192.168.7.2 - 192.168.7.n (allowing one
address per PC). The router itself will probably take 192.168.7.1; you may
want to edit the \windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file to add a line

192.168.7.1 router

so you can browse to a URL of "router" when you need to configure the
router.

Having enabled DHCP, installed the cards and connected everything up, check
that everything's working by:

- at each PC, running Start | Run | cmd, then "ipconfig" - check that a
valid IP address in the chosen range has been allocated
- at each PC, check that you can ping another PC and the router: Start | Run
| cmd, then "ping 192.168.7.1" (or whatever IP address)

Don't connect the ADSL port of the router to the phone line until you've got
a microfilter, otherwise you'll get an intermittent burst of white noise on
your phone calls (there speaks the voice of experience!).
