I have two machines at home, one running Windows 98se - my main
workhorse and a second machine running WindowsXP Home mainly used for
gaming and graphics related work.
These machines are connected to each other via a cross-over cable, the
Wind98 machine having two network cards one for networking the two
machines and the other for my cable modem. The WindowsXP based machine
has two on-board network connections.
The Windows 98 machine is also set-up to provide internext access for
the other machine by using ICS. Until this evening the network seemed
to be fine, but now I just can't see the other computer on the network
from either machine. Strange thing is the ICS service still works. I
can get access to the internet from the second (XP) machine, but I
cannot gain access to the other computer in the same room!
I have recently put two new HDs drives into the XP machine and used
Norton Ghost to recreate the OS on the new drive by copying the image
of the old HD. I'm sure the network has been used since.
Similarily, the Win98 machine has had a re-install of windows plus all
my software. Again I'm sure the Network has been used since this took
place. Whatever I do I just can't seem to gain access to either
machine from the other machine on the network.
I think the problem lies with the XP machine as it does at least
complain about me possibly not having access rights to the other
machine, but everything appears to be set correctly. Both machines
have shared folders on them which can be view by going through the
network on the same machine, just not when you try and gain access
from the other machine.
If anyone has any ideas it would be much appreciated - it's drving me
muts ATM.
