Hi there,

I am trying to network my desktop DELL running Windows98
or 98 SE i'm not sure. and my laptop running windows XP
home edition. I installed a Network card at my desktop and
it says that it is working properly. I set up the network
for the XP and then used the XP CD to set up the home or
small office network using the XP CD. but unfortunately I
cannot see what went wrong in this process. it still does
not work. I can't see a connection being established in
either computer. do I have to install any software or
routers. please Help me.

your help is appreciated

How are the two computers connected? If by only a cable (no hub, switch or
router between them) is the cable a standard cable or a crossover cable?

know if it is standard or a crossover cable? I just bought
it off of a computer store should I go back and ask. or
can I find out myself??

ask where you bought your cable if it was a crossover cable ...if not ,
thats what you need if you are not using router/hub

it sounds like you did not get the proper drivers installed for your NIC ,
did you use the disk provided?

I asked at the shop I bought the cable from ... they said
it is a crossover cable ... but I still don't know whats
wrong... I mean if Installed the card properly and it says
it is working properly and the other computer is working
fine.. I set up the Network from the Network wizard in the
XP and I used the XP CD to set it up on the 98. the name
of the network on both computers are MSHOME .. do I need
to do any other things to make it work..

Hard post to follow. Been awhile since I did mine but did
you say you used the XP disk in the Win98 puter?

You only install ICS on the puter with the Modem in it
with that computers OP disk. The host puter will make a
1.44 disk to set up the client computer.
