Eventually you'll probably want to plug the Internet directly into the Linux
box, and then plug the Windows box into the Linux one. But I think in your
case that might be getting ahead of yourself. For instance, you'll need to
know about such things as NIC (ethernet cards), IP addresses (RFC 1918), and
packet forwarding. And IPTables.

For now, why don't you simply unplug the Internet from the Windows machine (I'm
guessing an ethernet/cable modem connection), plug it into the Linux box, and
take things one step at a time. See if you can get the Linux machine to access
the Internet. This way you can begin reading up on configuring your Linux box,
and then come back with SPECIFIC questions.

Don't forget to mention which Linux distro and version that you're using.

Best regards,
David

Have you the router IP as the gateway in the linux box ? It won't work if it
doesn't know where to go etc.

The linux box also needs an IP that doesn't exist on the other machines...
is there dhcp or is it static...

from a terminal shell, you need to be root:
type 'drakconnect' - it's a network connection wizard.
that should get you started.

http://www.samba.netfirms.com/ has a tutorial on howto setup samba
with pictures and links to howto network linux and windows.

I think you should read about the importance of pinging the other computers.

If the router is making the internet connection - just plug the Linux
machine in to that router. The Windows machines must have networking
configured get the settings from them. Make sure you set the Linux computer
to its own ip address unless you're using DHCP in which case you just need
the address of the router (probably 192.168.1.1)
