Networking Win ME (second network card) to Win 2000

I have a Win ME with cable access using the network card
that came with the machine. I know I will not be able to
hook my other Win 2000 PC up and share the internet
connection.

However I would like to network the two pcs, but despite
changing IP addresses, gateways etc. I cannot get this to
work. Before the WIN ME machine was "repaired" recently
it did work, but the engineer re-loaded ME and lost what
settings I had!

If the ME machine is off the WIN2000 will tell me the
network cable is not plugged in, and if I duplicate IP
addresses both machines complain. I am missing one vital
step, but have no idea what it is. Can anyone help please?
