Networking tools/software for testing cable

Scenario
--------

Assume 2 win98 PCs are connected by a crossover cable (category 5E) via a
network card on each.

Is there any software, when installed on 2 computers, allows me to test
whether the cable is OK ?

Testing goes on like this: via the software I can choose to send a signal on
Pin 2; on the other PC when a signal is received on Pin 2, a representation
of Pin 2 on the monitor is flashed/lighted.

Follow this

START
Programs
MS-DOS Prompt

Type ipconfig and then press enter (do this for both systems)

Type ping 000.000.0.0 (replace the zero's with the IP address of the other
system, then press enter). You can repeat the proces using the other system
to verify the ping test.

If you get a reply back then you are in business, if not then you will need
to check the network cards and the cable.
