Sorry to barge in here unannounced, but I'm a desperate woman!
I've just bought a Dell inspiron 2200 with a Belkin ADSL Modem with
Wireless Router. The lappy has a wireless card built in. I have been
trying for over a week now, to get both my desktop and lappy to share my
broadband connection. I've tried following the manuals, reading up
online, taking advice from forums, but to no avail! I would also like to
network the 2 computers, but for now, I'd be happy if I could just get
online with both machines at the same time. I've even phoned Dell
support and they just told me to reset the laptop to the factoory
settings - it didn't make any difference.
If anyone can help, I'd be very happy!
Thanks, Amanda

Can the laptop see the network? Have you gone inot the router
configuration and enabled the Wireless?

Yes, there is a signal and I've got the configuration right. In fact, I
had both machines hooked up to the internet, then someone told me to get
a dongle - that's when my problems started! Then i was told I didn't
need the dongle, so took it back to the shop, then I was told I did need
it and so on... Now I can't get either machine on the internet, and I
certainly can't set up a network, even though the lappy is picking up an
excellent signal. I've used all the wizards, got all the SSID's
right... Hope you have an idea that i haven't thought of yet!
Many thanks!

There are so many things it could be, start simple. Forget about the laptop
for now, is the desktop connected via a network cable? That is the simplest
way of connecting.

Are you able to log onto the router? (put the ip address of the router into
internet explorer, eg 192.168.1.1)
When you are setting the details of the router, are you able to confirm it
is online?
Make sure the wireless is active, and the wireless security is off, you can
worry about that later

If you have reached this stage, then turn on laptop, if your laptop is
fairly new or has centrino, it will have wireless networking built in. If it
has it built in do not use a wireless dongle....

Assuming you have not entered any manual ip addresses, and you are able to
pick up the SSID, then you should be able to connect.

You can verify you are connected, by going to Start, run, type cmd, in the
box type ipconfig /all
it will show you a list of addresses

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.4
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : 16 October 2005 22:52:54
Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : 19 January 2038 04:14:07

they look similar to this, ie. they begin with 192.168.xxx.xxx then you are
in business.....

Thanks so much for your in depth information - I think it's gonna help a
lot. I should tell you that since I posted to the newsgroup last night,
I went back to using my old Broadband setup that I've had for a couple
of years, out of desperation!! OK, are you sitting comfortably?
First thing is, the desktop is connected but I have 3 icons in
the taskbar.
first is "Wanadoo Broadband Connection - speed 800mbps".
Second is "ATM Connection, a network cable is unplugged" (has a red x on
it)
third is "1394 connection, Speed 400mbps Status connected".
In "Network Connections" via control panel, there are no less than 5 icons!
First -1394 connection,
second - ATm Connection,
3rd - ATM Elan Connection,(has a red x on it)
4th - Wanadoo broadband connection,
5th - Local Area Connection
This is the result of buggering about and getting well meant but
conflicting advice for a week! If I can get the desktop configured
properly through the Belkin correctly first, then I guess that would be
easier. Can you help me to go step by step through the process of
getting it right, then getting the lappy configured after?
Can't tell you how much I appreciate your help!
Regards
Amanda

I would uninstall any ISP or modem specific software or stuff to do
with unwanted wireless dongles that has been added (Control Panel -
Add/Remove programs)

If you don't use the 1394 Firewire uncheck its "show icon in
notification area" from the properties of the icon in Network
conenctions.

Anything ATM-ish or bizarre in Network connections after a reboot and
removing software as above - just delete it.

Then go to the Locla Area Connection icon, right mouse for properties,
select interent Protocol (TCP/IP) select the Properties of that with
the button and set to "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain
DNS server automatically". Check that the relevant port light is on on
the Belkin (ie th eLAN cable is plugged in) and do a right mouse
Disable / Reenable on the LAN connection. Tell us what happens, and
what the IP address of the LAN connection is afterwards (right mouse,
Status, Support)

I've done all that you said, but there are still 5 icons in network
connections and they can't be deleted as there's no option by right
clicking or in the left hand column on the screen. Would Disable be the
same thing? Thanks for your help!
