I have now had my network cabling tested and am still having a networking
problem with Windows Delayed Writes occuring.

Can someone please tell me how to go about testing using network monitor on
my XP workstation and my 2003 server.

I have posted to 3 areas and not had a reply.

If I can get monitor working then I will be able to sort the rest out I am
sure - I just can't work out how to get it working or even where I can get
the XP version of network monitor.

can any help please?

thanks,

jON

It doesn't look like this is a layer 1,2,3 issue.

Not sure that I understand ... what is layer 1 2 and 3?

I have applied the fix in this article .... the next step is apparently to
look for retransmitted or failed packets and for that I need to use network
monitor.

Whilst I can find the cut down version for windows 2003 srver, I can't find
the one for windows xp.

" It doesn't look like this is a layer 1,2,3 issue. "

In answer to your question "what is layer 1 2 3"

http://www.webopedia.com/quick_ref/OSI_Layers.asp

This should give you enough information for the OSI Layers

I am not sure why NETENG is so sure that it would not be a problem
within these layers because a faulty NIC
could cause the issues you are seeing and I am pretty sure that could
be considered a layer 2 issue.

Sorry I can't help you with network monitor as I use a hardware
analyzer (lucky me!!)

GOOD LUCK

Now I am completely lost ...

I have used Ethereal to packet capture and reproduced the Delayed Write
error ....

But where on earth do I look???

There are megabytes of data .... I have no idea where to look now...

Additional information for your reference:

Thanks Todd,

I had already reviewed all of these and one mentioned using network monitor
to diagnose the connection between server and workstation.

I have been pointed in the direction of Ethereal but the amount of info is
staggering and I am afraid that I am lost trying to work out what I should
be looking into.

So far no one has been able to tell me how to install and use Network
Monitor on XP and on the server I have a cutdown version which doesn't seem
to do what I need to.

I just need to install network monitor on both server and workstation so
that I can check Microsoft suggestion in their knowledge base further.

You don't need it installed on both. Just choose one and if you have to,
span the port.

Sorry, lost me completely NetEng ...

can you point me in the direction of what you would do.

I only have a workstation and a seerver and one or other has a problem with
the NIC.

I have never done this before - complete novice ...

Even an MS article on what to do would help ...

many thanks,

jON
