Networking problem

Hi all,

I am having problems trying to network 2 desktops together. Both are running
WinXP Home. My wish-list is:

1. Shared internet connection
2. Shared files/folders
3. Shared printer

I am using a Belkin ADSL Modem with built in wireless router (F5D7630-4A)
and a Balkin wireless access point. PC1 is connected to the router/modem via
Fast Ethernet cable, PC2 is connected wirelessly. Shared internet connection
is not a problem - straight out of the box. However I am unable to get 2 and
3 above to work. I am not sure whether what I am doing is correct (probably
not), so would appreciate any help.

What is the simplest way to achive this?

Cheers,

J.

together this:

>2. Shared files/folders

Right click on the files\folders to be shared, select sharing. Fill in
the boxes as required.
I find it easier to map network shares from the remote machines, to do
this right click on network places and select map network drive.
Browse to the files\folders to be shared and away you go.

On the machine that has the printer right click on it in start =>
settings => printers and faxes and select sharing. Fill in the boxes
again. On the remote computer click on network places and browse to
the machine with the shared printer and click on it then the printer.
It will now install the drivers on the remote machine.

Or something like that.

Thank for that, I think I am getting closer to having it sorted.

I can now see the other machine (PC1) from the remote machine. However I get
an error when trying to add the printer or see the shared files - I get
error messages that suggest that permission is not set up properly I think.

Any idea what to do next? I already disabled the firewall on PC1, but it
didn't seem to help matters.

TIA,

J.

Er, don't use XP much myself but I believe you might have to have the
users setup on the remote machines as well as local ones. Go into
control panel then users and passwords and add a user with the same
credentials as they have on the other machine.

All is now sorted - it was my firewall that was in the way.

Thanks again.

Good show, and all off the top of my head about an OS I'm not really
keen on!

WinXP networking is broken. Usually its both computers trying to be the
Master Browser or NetBIOS over TCP/IP not enabled. Here's some methods
for troubleshooting and fixing it.
