sorry if this is a dumb question.....

I have a pc wired to a Linksys wireless broadband router & two other pcs
that connect wirelessly to this, for internet access. I have a printer
connected by usb to the first pc.

If I connect the printer instead to a spare socket on the router, is it then
possible for the other pcs to share the printer?

If so, can anyone suggest a website that provides guidance on how to achieve
this?

TIA

Are you using Windows XP ?

The wireless PCs can share the printer if it's connected to the first PC
using the normal file/printer share.
Downside is that the PC has to remain switched on for this to work.

Alternatively use a print server to connect it to the network.

Some routers have a print server built in so in that case you can connect it
directly to the router.

HTH

:-)

You need a printer server (small box that connects to the network and
the printer) capable of supporting USB.

OK, thanks. The printer has a usb and a parallel socket. Does that make
any difference to what I might need to connect up and share?
Thanks for the response.

Not necessarily. I've got a printer shared off a Win98SE PC (connected using
USB) and this is accessible to other PCs on my network which use Win XP SP2.

It widens up the choice alot as there are more printer servers
available that support parallel ports and you'll find an Intel jobbie
on Ebay cheap.

You could of course just "share" the printer on the host PC by going to
Printers, right clicking on it and selecting "Share" but the advantage
of having a printer server is that you don't have to have a computer
switched on with the printer connected to it just to allow other
computers to print off it.

Not disputing you can but with a printer server, which is £20 on Ebay,
you don't have to have a computer running just so the network users can
print off the printer.
