When I start my laptop(XP) the client PC desktop(98SE) also starts. How can
I prevent this happening?

Please check the WOL settings both in BIOS and in Control Panel ->
Network -> (your network card) -> Properties -> Advanced

It is safe to leave on wakeup on "Magic Packet" (as this has to be sent
explicitely to a known target with a special utility) but please make sure
you turn off the "Link change" or "Link status" options.

Thanks Paul for your suggestion.
I disabled both 'APM mode wakeup ' and 'wakeup frame' but could not find
where Magic Packet was so that I could turn off 'Link change' or 'link
status'
The chages so far have not changed what is happening.
Regards
Blair

Maybe WOL isn't the problem. Does it misbehave both when the laptop is
running off batteries and when it's powered from the wall?

My laptop is always powered from the wall.

Try it without the wall connection. If it does something different
when battery powered, we've learned that you've probably got some
sort of weird ground loop that is affecting the power-on circuits
in the desktop.

Surprise Surprise!!! To day when I powered up the laptop the desktop
remained dormant.. Your suggestions must have paid off! I won't ask why it
only happened today!
Thanks again
