If you use a null-modem cable in the serial ports you can get
filesharing to work, but it will be painfully slow. You should be able
to pick up a couple of ISA network cards for next to nothing and do it
properly - you might even be able to get hold of some free BNC cable and
fittings, so avoiding the cost of a crossover Cat5 cable. There's often
someone in uk.adverts.computer offering old network kit for not much
more than the cost of postage.
As for software - for filesharing everything is built into Windows, for
Internet sharing W98SE has ICS.
