Slightly off topic part here :

I have this laptop http://snipurl.com/1fp40 (3 of them on a wireless
network) and is has 512mb of DDR II. I had a look where it is located and
there is only one slot so I guess I need a 1 gig memory module.

When looking for some on mymemory.co.uk they show the memory having a mhz
rating which is what confuses me as to which I would need. COuld anyone be
kind enough to help me figure out what kind of module I would need ?

On topic:

Can I boost my wireless signal as one of those laptops is at the far end of
the house and doesn't always get a great signal and sometimes it just drops
off the face of the earth.

Thanks kindly

Maybe you have some onboard RAM, and that's why there's only one slot.
Try running this http://images.crucial.com/drivers/CrucialUKScan.exe to
find what's fitted and what you can upgrade it to.

Umm, don't trust the results from this tool. I just ran it and it told
me I have 4GB of RAM which is most definitely not the case.

Maximum Memory Capacity: 4096MB
Currently Installed Memory: 4GB
Available Memory Slots: 2
Number of Banks: 4
Dual Channel Support: Yes
CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel
CPU Family: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz Model 2, Stepping 9
CPU Speed: 3014 MHz

I ran it and tol me I have 2 slots and everything else was spot on. Except
the 2 slots I can only see 1 and have had a good look and think maybe its
onboard memory as has been suggested. So I think I'll buy a 1 gig module as
I can't for the life of me see any other slot and I don't want to start
dismantling the laptop as that could go pear shaped. If there were more
memory slots would it not be next to the one I can see ?

Thanks for the help guys.

Pull the RAM from the slot you can see and see if it still boots. :-)

Not necessarily, on some laptops there are two slots with one hidden
under the keyboard or elsewhere and one under a removable plate. Some of
the HP machines have one socket underneath and one on top, some have two
slots 'stacked' on top of each other. You might be able to track down
the manufacturer of the machine and get a manual that shows you the
location.

Excellent advice ... I have odne so and found out that one of the memory
modules is located underneath the keyboard, but god knows how to get at it.
I don't know if the keyboard can be pryed up or if I have to unscrew the
casing and get to it like that, or everything falls out and I stand there
stumbled on how to rebuild it

Commonly fixed with either a couple of screws from underneath, possibly
with some latches at the top (number keys) that latch it to the case or
alternatively screws above the number key row that are hidden by a
removable bezel that can be levered up (also sometimes secured by
screws) Download a disassembly manual from HP to see what I mean, NC6120
is one example of the latch n screw underneath type and if you can find
a 'service' manual for a Toshiba Satellite Pro 6000 or 6100 that's an
example of the screws on top type. Google is your friend.
