I've got a mac with Windows XP 64 installed and i want to network it
to a PC with Windows XP 32.

I've bought a 'Sitecom' wired router and gone through the network
setup wizard on each... but i cant see the files on the other computer
(on both). The Sitecom people tell me it should work.

Any ideas on whats wrong/how I should do this/or what type of router i
should use?

I don't see why it shouldn't work. It's usually easier if you are logged
in with the same user name and password on each machine (you must use a
password if you want to share files) and you must specifically set up
shares on the folders you wish to share (on both machines).

I have set up sharing with the specific folders - by right clicking >
properties etc. Do I need to activate sharing anywhere else?

If I go to My network places > entire network > microsoft windows
network.... I can see my network there but if i click on it it doesn't
show any folders.

The weird thing is that the PC still sees the files that were on the
mac operating system from when i connected the PC and mac before (when
i was using mac operating system and not windows xp64) (even though
i've deleted those files) - is there a way of deleting old networks/
wiping everything and starting from scratch?

Thanks.

No, that should do it.

I have seen that, Windows can be slow catching up, have you tried a
reboot? Are you using the same work group name on both machines?

Have a look in your NetHood directory, mine is:
C:\Documents and Settings\jeff\NetHood

you can delete what you don't want.

Have you set up Windows own firewall properly on each system?
I have seen something similar on a mixed XP/98SE local network
that was caused by both machines wanting to be the Master Browser,
so you may need to check that.

It should work just fine.
First thing to do is get both machines to a stage where they can ping each
other , so check the ip addresses are correct and the firewalls are off.
Once that's complete you'll need to make sure they are both in the same
workgroup and then share the folders you want

I've tried typing commands such as...

ipconfig
netsh interface ip show config
netsh int ip reset [log_file_name]

None seem to give a response in the command manger. For 'netsh
interface ip show config' I just get 'no more data is
available'.

I'm a complete beginner at this type of thing - what do i need to do
to start off here? How do i find/assign an ip to the mac (if thats
what i need to do)? I really need to get these networked.

Any help much appreciated!

I put a guide together at:
http://www.jgaines.eu/html/networkin...computers.html

which may help with setting up IP addresses.

I knew I'd think of something else after pressing the send button...

Have you looked in device manager for each machine? Are your NICS
recognised? I know XP64 drivers are thin on the ground, make sure you have
the right ones!

Ok... how do i find out if my NICS are recoconised and if i have the
right drivers?

In the device manager i look under 'network adapters' and see 1394 net
adapter.
The only weird thing that i see is a yellow question mark over 'other
devices' and the devices listed for that.
