I run my own corporate network, aswell as develop solutions for
networking, however its agreed that this is a HOME networking usenet
group.
AD is for typically corporate networks. A hardware firewall looks for
signatures or particular types of packets e.g. ICMP, PING, TCP (what
port?) UDP, IPSEC, PPTP etc.
IDS is up to you, how secure you want it to be is up to your knowledge,
Judging by the fact you cant do your own research suggests to me you
dont know what your doing from the offset!
2 or 3 NICs would be used if for example u want a computer to be on two
networks and to act as a proxy or a gateway, therefore other computers
would not have direct access to another network.

Same sort of questions, obviously if you dont design it correct its not
going to be secure! You need to plan what people need! Do they need
internet, do they need that particular type of connection? do they need
to be monitored, how would you solve that?
It really isnt hard! DO YOUR RESEARCH!
It all comes down to how good you plan and how thick you are!
If you wish to gain any commercial advice dont hesitate to use either
