Hi,
new to networking and now confused. I have a desk and laptop wirelessly
connected to a router, independtly both work fine. however when i try to
access shared docs on the other computer it says that i dont have access
permission despite the file sharing enabled on the other computer.

looking into it further windows gives the error 'there is an ip address
conflict with anoter system on the newtork'. i think that it appears be that
one of the network adapters and one of the lan adapters on the other computer
have been given the same ip address. when i attempt to 'repair connection'
it fails message- 'failed renewing ip address'

any ideas would be most welcome!
cheers
Gordon

Two separate issues: file sharing and IP addressn conflict!

1. Please identify the operating system you're running on all each machine,
any firewall software, the type of Internet connection, and the type of of
wireless router.

2. What are the IP addresses you're finding? Are they all in the range of
private addresses typically assigned by a wireless router (e.g.
192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.51)?

3. File sharing: are we talking Windows XP Pro? or Windows XP Home?

Hi John,

laptop runs xp home whilst the desktop runs xp pro. i am using a netgear
dg834router
here are the results of network diagnostics for the desk top
(dosen't mean much to me though!)

BUFFALO WLI2-PCI-G54 Wireless LAN Adapter (FAILED)
Caption = [00000012] BUFFALO WLI2-PCI-G54 Wireless LAN Adapter
DatabasePath = %SystemRoot%\System32\drivers\etc
DefaultIPGateway = 192.168.0.1(Same Subnet) (PASSED)

Description = Broadcom 802.11g Network Adapter - Packet Scheduler Miniport
DHCPEnabled = TRUE
DHCPLeaseExpires = 10:34:36 11/02/2005
DHCPLeaseObtained = 10:34:36 09/02/2005
DHCPServer = 192.168.1.101 (FAILED)
Pinging 192.168.1.101 with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out.
Request timed out.

Request timed out.
Ping statistics for 192.168.1.101:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss)

the laptop netgear pc card is given as ip address 192.168.0.6 (failed)

thanks for your help!

Have you changed the IP address of the router? The DHCP is dishing out a
different subnet to the routers IP.

The router which I assume is the gateway has the IP address of 192.168.0.1.
The PC and Laptop has IP address 192.168.1.XXX. The first three parts of
the IP address should be the same. Easiest way to fix it is to change the
router IP address to 192.168.1.1

Sorry, just noticed that the Laptop is 192.168.0.X. There seems to be two
DHCP servers dishing out different IP addresses. Could be someone else
nearby has a wireless setup or either the Laptop or PC have a DHCP server
running. Have you got ICS running on either PC? Can you go to command
prompt and use ipconfig /all for both the laptop and PC and post back the
results.

Let's see...

The DG834 is an ADSL modem/router. Not a wireless router. It IS the ADSL
modem connected to your telephone line. It IS the DHCP server which dishes
out IP addresses (from 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.253) to users of your home
network.

It IS NOT a wireless device, so to use it with a wireless-ready computer,
you need an "access point".

Because wireless router are cheap ($30 for Netgear WGR614), I've used the
WGR614 wireless router as an access point in several application. To do this
you have to disable the DHCP capability of the WGR614 so that only the
primary router (your DG834) makes IP assignments.

If you don't have an access point in your network, well.....what do you
have?

1. Desktop computer with PCI wirelss card?

2. Laptop with Netgear PCMI NIC card (not wireless?

3. Netgear DG834 ADSl modem/router (not wireless)?

4. Access point?
