Hi all,
My sister purchased an HP PSC 2410 multi-function printer today and
asked me to set it up for her. The easiest way to set it up would be to
connect it directly to her computer, but I was hoping I could set it up
so that it was on the LAN, and not have to be connected to a computer
that is on all the time.
Here's what I have here at my disposal so far:
1 - SMC wireless router/firewall device (7004wbr??) in my room. This
device has a parallel printer port/server option.
2 - Homegrown desktop computer running WinXP in my room. Connected via
cat5 cable.
3 - Canon BJC-3000 printer hooked up to computer listed in #2, via USB
4 - My laptop: IBM T-20 (W2k Pro), using an older DLINK WiFi PCCard to
connect.
5 - Her laptop: Fujitsu (WinME), using a DLink DWL-650 WiFi PCCard
connection.
6 - the new 2410 device. This device has a USB port, but not an ethernet
port.
Ideally, the 2410 is going to be sitting in the dining room so that both
of us can access it, and I'm hoping I don't have to have a PC fired up,
listening to its whirring fan all day! And the kicker is that I want to
do this as cheaply as possible.
Doable?
I was thinking something along the lines of a USB printer server with a
USB connector, but aren't they pretty expensive?
As a side note, if anyone out there has used this device themselves,
have they been able to use the non-print functions over the LAN (fax,
scanner, etc)?
Later,
Robert
