Client's system is W98 according to Windows Explorer,
however the Certificate of Authority on the system says
it is 98SE. It has been heavily used for games and AOL
IM. O/S has probably never been updated

IE (V 5) won't start unless to a blank page. When you try
to open any network page, even using an IP address, it
immediately dies on an illegal operation.

Didn't work properly under dial-up or using a Belkin 11g
wireless. Currently running on a D-Link DFE-530TX over
DSL. From command prompt, ping says system unknown but
will handle an IP address properly. However, tracert dies
on the third hop with an 'illegal operation'.

Network neighborhood opens the window but is unable to
expand (unable to browse the network...not accessible).

I've tried deleting various protocols in the network
page, but the system seems to ignore my attempts.

Any suggestions before I format the drive and reinstall
98?

What error message(s) do you see? Verbatim, if you please.

First of O/S uncertainty resolved. It is W98SE per system
icon.

Let's take the IE case...
request http://www.ge.com

Window pops up titled 'Work Offline' saying "No
connection to the Internet is currently available. To
view Internet content that has been saved on your
computer, click Work Offline. Click Try Again to
attempt to cvonnect."
(Click Try Again)
Window titled 'Iexplore' says "This program has performed
an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the
problem persists, contact the program vendor."
(Click Details)
IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault in module <unknown>
at 0000:01260f47. Registers:[...etc.]

All right! That gives us two likely directions to go in.

The first thing we need to do is check those connection settings. Open up
Internet Explorer, click Tools, then Internet Options, then look on the
Connections tab. Did you turn on the "Never dial a connection" option
there?

If that fails we need to look at network settings or consider the
possibility that you have spyware or adware on your system. Do you
currently use any protection against unwanted pests and guests on your
system?

Yes, I did have that otion set. It seemed appropriate as
I wasn't connected to a phone line, and had the e-net
card attached to my Linksys router.

Changing it to dial whenever a network connection is not
present, it doesn't fail, but immediately tries to dial
out. If I hook up a phone line, the modem reports it
doesn't hear a dial tone (although there is one). In any
event it doesn't abort.

The box had accumulated a lot of spyware/adware. I ran
Adaware 6.0 with the latest updates prior to the testing
I've reported here.

One more thing to try here - let's see if we can do a reinstall of Internet
Explorer. Go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, find IE there,
highlight it and click the Add/Remove button. You should be offered several
options, select the one to reinstall Explorer.

Internet Explorer is not listed in the Add/Remove
Programs window. I see America Online, AOL Insdtant
Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger (SM), HP Internet Center
and other HP software, MSN Internet Access 5.4 and a host
of other things, but not Internet Explorer. And if I did
remove it, where would I get it from to reinstall it?

As I said, if it were there you'd be offered the chance to reinstall or
repair it. Honestly, at this point, I'm out of ideas completely.
