Actually David, if I understand your method, I used exactly that same method
a few days ago to fix TCP/IP on an XP Pro box.
First, I deleted the corrupt registry keys, winsock and winsock 2 (I forget
the exact full registry path, but search should turn it up).
Second, since you can't uninstall TCP/IP in XP (it's considered a core
component), I reinstalled TCP/IP using the method you described. The
filename I browsed for in the \Windows\Inf folder was "nettcpip.inf". Is
that what you did? After a restart, that fixed my problem (corrupt TCP/IP
due to a 3rd-party firewall program, which I uninstalled prior to the
protocol reinstall).
