Hello all,
I am having a problem with networking.
I must have done something because all of a sudden
I can't ping anything but myself and the loopback address.
I've checked the routing tables and those are okay.
I have even reinstalled the driver for the NIC(which says
this device is working properly). I've tried changing
cables also. Lastly, I took the computer off of the
network and put it on a private switch with another host
to see I could ping host B. No dice.
I don't have any firewalls going.

I tried reinstalling the TCP/IP Protocol by deleting the
folowing keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Winsoc
k

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Winsoc
k2

then rebooting, but that doesn't work as Winsock2 will not
go away.

Therefore I can't add the TCP protocol like so:

To reinstall TCP/IP, follow these steps:
Right-click the network connection, and then click
Properties.
Click Install, click Protocol, and then click Add.
Click Have Disk
Type C:\Windows\inf, and then click OK.
In the list of available protocols, click Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click OK.
Restart the computer.

Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks,
David Williams

Try adding alternative protocol like IPX/SPX. Then remove TCP, install TCP,
remove IPX/SPX.

Actually David, if I understand your method, I used exactly that same method
a few days ago to fix TCP/IP on an XP Pro box.

First, I deleted the corrupt registry keys, winsock and winsock 2 (I forget
the exact full registry path, but search should turn it up).

Second, since you can't uninstall TCP/IP in XP (it's considered a core
component), I reinstalled TCP/IP using the method you described. The
filename I browsed for in the \Windows\Inf folder was "nettcpip.inf". Is
that what you did? After a restart, that fixed my problem (corrupt TCP/IP
due to a 3rd-party firewall program, which I uninstalled prior to the
protocol reinstall).
